Pratibimba's Projects

The Tri Femme Video Poem Series:

This video project combines Sujata Tibrewala's artwork and poetry with Lakshmi Rao's music to share the stories of three women. One is in her 40s and grew up in India, the other is in her 20s and raised in the US, and one is a timeless goddess. They exist in three distinct cultures, times, and generations. Still, their stories intersect, exposing both the insidious ways in which the patriarchy regenerates each generation and the power women gain when they reclaim themselves and their worth.

Sujata Tibrewala on the series:
It is close to my heart because it explores the systemic and subconscious repression women face in conservative societies. The most striking part of this repression is that those being repressed often do not even realize it is happening.

Throughout my life, I have been one of these women. I was made to believe I couldn’t do or be certain things. Looking back, I now see that the restrictions imposed on me were not always done so out of ill intent or even on purpose. Rather, people's views and intentions were shaped by a patriarchal society, which made discrimination against and repression of women the default and the "best" choice. It is this societal upbringing that I question - both through my art and now also through my poetry.

Performance At La Pena Berkeley

La Peña Cultural Center and the UC Berkeley Women of ColorX Initiative collaborate once again to brought "The Empowering Women of Color Open Mic!" I had the honor of performing here with many women of Color presenting powerful, robust thoughts.

If you have time do go to link above to click at my performance that begins at 1.03.

I perform the third poem in the series speak about seeing my mom succumbing herself to the expectations of elders and never realizing her potential. I learnt many important lessons from there - resilience and positive rebellion being just a couple of them. So grateful to @lapenaculturalcenter for opening their doors to such initiative and @UCberkeley for letting us present our thoughts

"From the man-made lake built on top of land made from human debris and landfill was planted a-weeping willow tree. Her roots seeking nourishment came up above ground pushing, till the roots started forming an eye. When the eye opened she could see the beautiful planet she was attached to, with fires and winds, sunrises and sunsets, planets flying past. Glittery stars promising more and less. The leaves of Weeping willow tree rustled and swung as her hair brushed her eyes." --Jessica Phrogus

How To Create Your Art Diary

I started this Group on May 22 2020 when the world was under lockdown. It started with me teaching others about art skills and it has now evolved into a safe platform where Artists and Art Enthusiasts can learn from each other and exchange ideas at an equal level without fear of Judgement...Art is definitely what brings this group together but more important is that we value everyone's opinion and art, because there are enough forums where we are judged and we judge ourselves.
