This one portrays Meera Bai Chanu, face of Indian weightlifting on the world stage, as an Olympic medal winner . She can lift two times her body weight using squats or “malasaña”.
With no infrastructure for the sport in her village, Mirabai had to travel around 40kms everyday riding on buses and hitchhiking on trucks to get to her training. Initially, she used bamboo trunks as barbells to hone her technique until she got the money to switch to conventional weights.
This image is drawn from images she posted on her Instagram account, including her image on the Olympic stage with this painful expression, since lifting double your body weight is obviously no joke and can be painful. The title of this work is from her instagram caption too : “Nothing worth it comes easy ".
In the far top is her image with other women in her family wearing Meitei traditional dresses, along side a foreground of a traditional Meiti shawl. The background is green open hills, something that is part of her, as her sport keeps her away from them.
I am using this pose to heal from plantar fasciitis as it stretches the muscles around my feet, knees and back, while strengthens my core and hips as I come back from it to the standing pose. Quick repetitions of this pose is also increases my heartbeat, while providing the perfect body weight cardio, perfect for my aging body.
