Scottish Mandala

Beautiful things happen when you combine two cultures, two thoughts together. This Tartan inspired mandala was created during one of my art classes. Usually I ask students to create something that comes to them naturally from their culture. So, one of my Scottish students @rmhilburn began with the plaid pattern as that’s what she could think of. We incorporated the knots and interlocking stripes into our mandala for added interest and we had a stunning discovery.

While plaid or tartan has a deep history and the earliest tartan was found in Scotland in third or fourth century AD, mandalas are one of the ancient art forms known to us from 12000 years ago! The bringing together of intricate and geometric patterns amazes me as it is something I haven’t seen before.
